Editor's Note: Hot Dog! The Journal is TGR Contributor Christian W. Dietzel’s inside account of Hollywood writer/director/producer Mike Marvin's fight to streamline to make a sequel to 'Hotdog! Dietzel is also engrossed in writing and developing Marvin’s untold life story as an outspoken ski film pioneer, and his later Hollywood career as a biographical docudrama called ‘A Notorious Run,' which Dietzel hopes is a combination of the 'Man On Wire’ of skiing with a ‘Boogie Nights’ twist that covers the distance of Robert Evans' 'The Kids Stays In The Picture.' Audiences should read his ‘Hotdog! The Legacy’ column and should keep an eye out for other media projects on the horizon spun from this universe. Will Harkin Banks and the gang return in 2016? March 7th, 2015. It’s a ballsack-hot winter day in L.A. And only slightly cooler inside the paper-strewn office of producer Mike Marvin’s Santa Monica townhouse, where we sit performing a table reading of the working script of the remake to Hotdog! The Movie alongside his ex-wife Michele. The former couple wraps up, bent over in laughter browsing her scantily clad photos from the archives I’ve been charged with digitally transferring that could make 1982 Playmate Shannon Tweed blush. On the couch to my left, the marshmallow-scented puffs of their daughter Ariel’s vaporizer rolls in clouds across the room like a bad Alice fallen in with the caterpillars of Wonderland as she listens to our little performance from an indifferent cross-legged posture on the couch. When the family gets together with Daddy to act out lines from the project that could make or break the last act of his storied career in Tinsel Town (the man has just turned 70), you know development has begun in earnest. That’s exactly the state of affairs with Mike Marvin’s quest to remake his 1984 cult classic, Hotdog! The Movie, possibly the greatest cult classic Hollywood film ever made that had anything to do with skiing. Michele slaps my wrist, leading the read with a sultry voiceover. “You be Le Morphion, kid. I’ll do camera direction, scene beats, and read for Chalker. Mikey can be Harkin.” Credits roll in with Hot Dog The Movie!, as we fade in: Melodrama and cinema quality dictation echo through the room as Michele delivers us through the opening beat, hard verbs, tortured spires of living granite, the flash of a Cessna, radio garble. Into the valley floor we go, cutting now to Ext. Valley Floor, onto Jaques Le Morphion, I’m preparing my best froggy dialect, and. ![]() “I am readeee for zuh-shot! Monsieur Chalker?! Come in on zee radio, sil vous plait–if you please!” Michele’s back with the camera, the single engine plane buffeting now as we’re on the precipice of crashing, and. “Closer, mon dieux! I must have realism! Closer!” I belt. Michele’s belting more story beats with lines about Go Pros and a fucknut named Buzz Chalker, melding into her own one liner as ‘Chalker’. To see videos we really, REALLY love, head to. “We’re caught in a fuckin’ rotor, kid!! This Froggy’s gonna get us killed!” Detailing her ex-man’s character that is a Go-Pro'ed out Harkin Banks, we’re ready to jump into a wintry airspace, as Marvin utters his own line, and. “The heck’s a rotor, Chalker?!” The reading from page one on flows on tit for tat as we hotdog our way through the first act and into the second, pressing through to his most recent revisions up to the 70 page mark. The table reading on this afternoon is a warm family moment for Mike Marvin, whose quiet interior life while gearing up for the producing war ahead is a fascinating look at a Hollywood animal’s machinations and the many invisible processes that take a concept from a script to the screen. Business is run from his townhouse, where we write, hang out with the family, hustle phone calls, massage line changes, and angle for interviews for his biopic I’m headlining the development of. Amazing what kind of studio work happens between one’s ears and in the simple setting of a home office these days. “Ok sweetie, we’re out. That was hot stuff!” comments Michele. “Oh, and I like the kid. You should let him run with what he wants. ” We wrap up as the whiff of Ariel’s marshmallow vape curls over one final time. And as Marvin’s girls head off into the beat of Santa Monica, I’m left with the breathless feeling of having just shredded through the script that just may become Hollywood’s next great sex comedy. The Movie–The Second Coming Will Mike Marvin's campaign to remake Hot Dog! The Movie succeed in 2016? Original movie poster from the 1984 original. The current direction of the new Hot Dog is an evolution of the first story line following the central journey of Harkin Banks bumping into a party-happy Sunny. In the script, Harkin readies to make what Marvin envisions as the most spectacular ski performance in all of cinematic history, with his Jacques Le Morphion character introduced as the seedy French ski filmmaker making a movie about Harkin’s free skiing adventures. We’re thrown into the raucous world of modern competitive free skiing, only this time in the place of the backdrop of freestyle moguls, aerials, and ski ballet, our intrepid hero Harkin Banks is headed out to Squaw Valley to compete in the “Lord Of The Boards” contest, a four-pronged event combining slopestyle, skier cross, half pipe, and big mountain skiing in order to establish the best all-around skier in the world. The rest of the 'ski-ploitation' elements are all there, with plenty of ass grabbing, hot tub antics, slug-sized joints, and antagonistic Russian competitors stepping up in place of the Austrian ones from the original. Mike Marvin’s remake of Hotdog! The Movie is gearing up as any great sex comedy should, making adjustments in scope and language to start roping in actors for an epicurean cinematic experience sure to make the producers of The Hangover blush. In short, there will even be more sauce to taste this time around. Mike Marvin posing with actress Tracey Smith, who played Sunny in the original Hotdog! Photo courtesy of Mike Marvin. The remake to Hot Dog has been a longtime passion project, a heritage piece in homage to his sex comedy talent and former life as an outspoken ski film pioneer during the boom times of freestyle skiing that raged from 1971 until its dramatic implosion at the end of the 1977 competition season. And while others have asked why Marvin would want to do a remake of the ultimate ski spoof–to which my go-to response harps on the deep heritage of the original film–Marvin’s answer is more simple. “To make money, dude. It has to be commercial to pull something like this off. But there’s also a lot of heritage.” Heritage indeed. But that’s another story, one that starts at the very dawn of ski porn. Drop in on my for a taste of that pie. Rick Sylvester drops like a stone towards the valley floor of Yosemite Valley during the world’s first ever ski cliff BASE jump, January 31st, 1972, filmed for Mike Marvin’s seminal 1972 ski film Earth Rider. This photo would go on to make the front page of the LA Times before snowballing across newspapers the world over. Photo courtesy of the. The story in development for the Hot Dog remake is somewhat liken to the cult classic tribute form George Miller has recently enhanced by putting together Mad Max: Fury Road, where we will be seeing Max united with the Furiosa heroine. “Idaho wonder boy ski film star Harkin Banks meets party girl Sunny on his quest to become world champion freeskier, vibing with agro Russian snot bag rival Ivan Yakinoff in a balls-deep competition to be the king of the hill” sums up the log line for preparations for this remake. Consider also how director John Milius’s 1978 surf classic Big Wednesday ignited the “surfploitation” genre, going all the way to complete flops like Blue Crush and the bare bottom of Matthew McConaughey's career, Surfer, Dude. In the same fashion, Hot Dog had a large influence on the wide succession of “skiploitation” films to trickle in across Hollywood’s radar in the ensuing decades, an ever more curious consideration taking into account Mike Marvin’s original continues to be the only widely commercially successful Hollywood ski film in history, having grossed some $38 million worldwide. If any project has the raw kinetic ability to kickstart the scope of skiing back into Tinsel Town’s mainstream, it stands to reason the Hot Dog remake harbors that power. Marvin’s crucible will be to attach the right people to the project, from the director to the cast to the writers that make the final adjustments updating the concept, and to then hotdog his way through the filming with out-of-this-world cinematography, such as with the new iteration of the infamous Chinese downhill. While he may direct himself, no final decision has been made. Finance has also been achieved, with a cool $12,000,000 in the pipeline. But pressing the go button to spend it is not as simple as ski fans might like it to be, a side to this emerging story I will be addressing in following journal entries. “What the fuck do we do if there’s no snow?” asks Marvin as we continue through the afternoon hashing out the development plan in his home studio HQ. My answer to him remains steadfast that all prayers are best answered by putting your sermon on the page. 'What the fuck do we do if there’s no snow?' Asks Marvin As we continue through the afternoon hashing out the development plan in his home studio HQ. My answer to him remains steadfast that all prayers are best answered by putting your sermon on the page. As such, an entirely new story direction may evolve over the coming year of development, especially considering the fretful factor of the western United States continued lack of snowfall. The consistent diminished accumulation could threaten continuity with shoot locations, potentially leaving it up to the team to write some fantastic twist into the plot connected to the climate change reaping havoc on the ski industry. “Squallywood” (Squaw Valley) may be the heart of the script setting for now, but other directions like writing in a Lord Of The Boards tour moving through Jackson Hole, Alaska, Chamonix, or Japan that kicks off out of the destination extreme skiing scene that was host to the original Hot Dog could just as well make the final cut in some fashion depending on the development teams continued talks with their executives, and how it all shakes out on the page with adjusting to mother nature. But remember, it’s a sex comedy, not a ski porn. While there’s sure to be some of the most mind boggling ski cinematography we’ve seen come out of Hollywood in years, the story is most closely centered around not just what happens below Harkins’ legs, but also what happens between them–and everything else off the slopes. Genesis 13 New International Version (NIV) Abram and Lot Separate 13 So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him. 2 Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold. 3 From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier 4 and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the Lord. 5 Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. 6 But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. 7 And quarreling arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time. 8 So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. 13 Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord. 14 The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring [] forever. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.” 18 So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord. None of the files shown here are hosted or transmitted by this server. The links are provided solely by this site's users. At the close of that excellent little manual entitled 'The Solar System,' written by Dr. Dick, we find an eloquent passage which beautifully expounds the text: - A survey of the solar system has a tendency to moderate the pride of man and to promote humility. Pride is one of the distinguishing characteristics of puny man, and has been one of the chief causes of all the contentions, wars, devastations, systems of slavery, and ambitious projects which have desolated and demoralized our sinful world. Yet there is no disposition more incongruous to the character and circumstance of man. 8:3-9 We are to consider the heavens, that man thus may be directed to set his affections on things above. ![]() What is man, so mean a creature, that he should be thus honoured! So sinful a creature, that he should be thus favoured! Man has sovereign dominion over the inferior creatures, under God, and is appointed their lord. This refers to Christ. In Heb 2:6-8, the apostle, to prove the sovereign dominion of Christ, shows he is that Man, that Son of man, here spoken of, whom God has made to have dominion over the works of his hands. The greatest favour ever showed to the human race, and the greatest honour ever put upon human nature, were exemplified in the Lord Jesus. With good reason does the psalmist conclude as he began, Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth, which has been honoured with the presence of the Redeemer, and is still enlightened by his gospel, and governed by his wisdom and power! Uslan Studio: Warner Bros./Warner Home Video MPAA Rating: PG (US) Runtime: 74 minutes. Plot Outline: The Dark Knight must contend. I’ve been a BIG fan of all the animated Bat-flicks. It’s not secret that I believe most of them are superior to the live-action BATMAN films of the previous series -- sans BATMAN ‘89. While BATWOMAN is not as good as its three predecessors ( MASK OF THE PHANTASM, SUBZERO, and BATMAN BEYOND: RETURN OF THE JOKER), it is still a solid and enjoyable Bat-movie. A new vigilante has emerged in Gotham: The Batwoman. She is not part of the “Batman Family,” so to speak, and The Batman (Kevin Conroy) himself isn’t happy about her appearance in Gotham either. So who is this “Batwoman?” And that is the question -- as implied in the title of the film, MYSTERY OF THE BATWOMAN. Like all good mysteries, there are suspects. One is Gotham PD cop Sonia Alcana (Elisa Gabrielli), who has some dealings with The Batman. Secondly, you have Dr. Ballantine (Kelly Ripa -- yes, THAT Kelly Ripa), a new research scientist at Wayne Enterprises. And finally, there’s Kathy Duquesne (Kimberly Brooks), the daughter of a Gotham mobster. Kathy (who is clearly modeled after actress Halle Berry) also serves as a love interest for Bruce Wayne. While the love story works well within the plot, if you prefer your Batman loveless and alone, this story arch will not be your cup of tea. A bit of Bat-trivia for you all: The Kathy Duquesne character is homage to Kathy Kane, “Bat-Woman” from the Batman comic books during the 50s and 60s. Anyway, back to our review. Each of these aforementioned women could be The Batwoman and all three have motives. Detective Alcana was saved by The Batman when she was a child -- did she follow in his line of work? We learn that Dr. “Rocky” Ballantine has a boyfriend in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Is she out to clear his name -- and for revenge. And Kathy lost her mother thanks to her father's criminal activity -- is she trying to do him and his business in? Think you can figure out this mystery? Well, to make things more complicated and throw the viewer off, The Batwoman (in costume) is voiced by actress Kyra Sedgwick -- not Ripa, Brooks, or Gabrielli. So could it be someone else entirely? Are there any classic Bat-rouges in this film you may ask? You bet: The Penguin (David Ogden Stiers), Rupert Thore (John Vernon), and Bane (Hector Elizondo). Of course, they’re up to no good. Cobblepot and old man Duquesne are in the mix together, while Bane has been brought in as an enforcer. A quick note on The Penguin. He is written quite well and Stiers does an excellent job voicing him. But the way he is drawn is, well, “old fasioned.” He again is presented as the dude in a tuxedo, top hat, monocle, umbrella, etc. Now, I don’t want to see the 'Burtonized' (No offense intended to you fans of RETURNS) version of the character, just something different. A nice black suit and tie perhaps? I don't even mind the umbrellas. Bane however, is done very good all the way around. For good measure, Bat-characters you would expect to be in a BATMAN film (based in this animated Bat-universe) are here as well: Commissioner Gordon (Bob Hastings), Alfred (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.), Barbara Gordon (Tara Strong) -- it is implied that there is/was something going on between Bruce and Babs -- and Det. Harvey Bullock (Robert Costanzo). I’m giving this Bat-movie a C+. All in all, MYSTERY OF THE BATWOMAN does The Batman proud and is a film that most fans will enjoy. Oh, one last thing. There are several 'bonus features' included on the DVD. The best was a Batman short I believe called 'The Chase.' No dialogue, just a game of cat-and-flying mouse set to music involving The Batman and Catwoman. And one word of caution, DO NOT watch the extras before you view the movie. The Minotaur remained in the Labyrinth receiving annual offerings of youths and maidens to eat. He was eventually killed by the Athenian hero. The word Minotaur is a compound word consisting of the ancient name ' Μίνως' or 'Minos' and the noun ' ταύρος' or 'bull.' Thus, the word Minotaur comes to mean 'bull of Minos.' It was Minos, whose name in Cretan actually means king, who was fated to be king of Crete even though Minos' ascension to power was a difficult journey because he first had to see off his sibling rivals. Minos, however, had one advantage that his brothers did not. He claimed that he had the support and authority from the gods to rule, and he boasted that he could prove it by praying for whatever he wanted and the gods would make it so. Thus, one day while sacrificing to, he prayed that a bull would appear from the depths of the sea. Minos vowed to heaven that he would sacrifice the bull to Poseidon once it appeared. Poseidon, then, produced a magnificent bull from the sea; thus, Minos' claim for power was validated for no one dared to defy the favor of the gods, let alone the mighty Poseidon who ruled over all of the seas. As a result of winning the throne, Minos banished his brothers from Crete. The three brothers would be re-united in afterlife, for after they died they were made judges in the Underworld. It was their task to judge the dead in order to assign where their placement was in the Underworld based upon the merits of their life. King Minos commanded Daedalus and Icarus to build a grand Labyrinth to house his wife's son: Asterion or Mintauros. However, King Minos did not fulfill his vow to Poseidon; he kept the majestic bull for himself and sacrificed a different one to the god. Angered by King Minos' disrespect, Poseidon plotted to punish him for his arrogance and hubris. In accordance to some versions of the myth, it is Poseidon who punishes Minos by instilling a passion within the king's wife, Pasiphae, for the bull that came from the sea. However, according to the author Hyginus, it is () who curses Pasiphae, because the Queen had not shown proper piety to the goddess for some time. The goddess punished her by sending a salacious passion for the majestic bull from the sea. Another version tells how Poseidon, angered by Minos, went to Aphrodite for her help in the matter and she cursed Pasiphae as a favor to Poseidon. Pasiphae & the Birth of the Minotaur Queen Pasiphae, plagued by her divinely inflicted desires, sought the help of Daedalus and Icarus. For Pasiphae, Daedalus constructed a wooden cow coated with a real cow hide and placed it upon wheels. Daedalus, then, put Queen Pasiphae inside the structure and wheeled her into the meadow that her beloved bull grazed in. It was there that she met and laid with the bull, since the bull thought the wooden cow was real. It is from this union that the Minotaur was born. The queen named the beast Asterion (after King Minos' stepfather), which the Cretan people knew to be the Minotaur's true name. Upon seeing the infant, King Minos discovered his wife's bestial affair and as punishment, Minos enslaved Daedalus and Icarus for their parts in the affair, but he left Pasiphae untouched. Pasiphae cared for Asterion and was able to nourish Asterion while he was a bull calf. However, as he grew he became ferocious and monstrous and she was unable to feed or care for him any longer. Asterion was unable to find a suitable source of food, since he was neither man nor beast, and so he started to eat people. In order to hide his wife's disgraceful affair and on the advise of an Oracle, King Minos commanded Daedalus and Icarus to build a grand Labyrinth to house his wife's son: Asterion or Mintauros. Death of Androgeos & Athen's Tribute While the construction of the Labyrinth was underway, King Minos discovered that his only human son, Androgeos, (with Pasiphae) had been killed. Some sources say that he was killed by the Athenians out of jealousy for his skill in the Panathenic Games. A different version of the myth claims that the King of, Aegeus, was angered by Androgeos' victories, and sent him to slay the unconquerable Marathonian Bull. In turn, he was killed by the bull and indirectly by the actions of the Athenians. Regardless of how, Androgeos was killed and King Minos blamed the Athenians for the death of his only human son and for the destruction of his family line. He sailed against the Athenians and harassed them until they agreed to pay the price for his son's death. King Minos demanded that Athens pay a tribute to Crete of seven maidens and seven youths every nine years. (There is some contradiction in the sources about how often these tribute were made, from every nine years to once a year). These tributes would then be placed in the Labyrinth for the Minotaur to devour. In various sources, the tributes or sacrificial victims were chosen by lot from only the most beautiful men and virginal girls. The Athenians consulted the Oracle of who instructed the of Athens to give Minos whatever he demanded. However, according to Catullus, the murder of Androgeos sparked a cruel plague on Athens. It is only when King Aegeus learned that by sending tributes to Crete and obeying Minos' demand that Athens would be saved; he agreed. Reluctantly, the Athenians submitted to Minos' terms and King Minos returned to Crete. The Death of the Minotaur Theseus, son of King Aegeus, was said to have volunteered for the third tribute of youths. He boasted to his father and to all of Athens that he would slay the Minotaur. He promised that on the journey home he would raise his white sails if he was victorious or have the crew fly black sails if he failed and were killed. Upon reaching Crete, the daughters of King Minos: Ariadne and Phaedra fell deeply in love with him. Unable to cope with Theseus being eaten by her half-brother the Minotaur, Ariadne went to Daedalus for help. She begged the craftsman to tell her how one could escape from his Labyrinth. Once he had told her, she raced to tell Theseus before he entered the Labyrinth. Following Daedalus' instructions, she handed Theseus a ball of string to help him find his way out of the Labyrinth. Upon entering the Labyrinth, Theseus tied one end of the string to the door and continued into the maze. He found the Minotaur in the furthest corner of the Labyrinth and killed him with the jabs of his fist (or in other accounts, he sneaks in the sword of Aegeus and slays the Minotaur with it). Unlike the Labyrinth's previous victims, Theseus is able to find his way out, because of Ariadne's gift. Theseus simply follows the thread back through the maze to find his way to the doors. He finds and leads the other Athenians out of the maze and quickly sails off to Athens with Ariadne and Phaedra. The Journey Home On the journey home, Theseus abandons Ariadne on the island of and continues to sail to Athens with his intended wife, Phaedra. On Naxos, Ariadne reflects on her actions and naivety of assisting with her brother's murder (the Minotaur) for Theseus, who she thought would marry her. Instead of marrying Theseus, Ariadne is discovered on Naxos by the god,, who she ends up marrying. In some versions of this myth, Dionysos appears to Theseus ordering him to abandon Ariadne, because he intends to wed her. Theseus is overjoyed to be almost home with his new wife Phaedra but absent-mindedly forgets to change the color of his sails from black to white. His father, King Aegeus, seeing the black sails from afar is overcome with grief and kills himself by jumping off a cliff into the sea. It is this act which secures Theseus' place as the new Athenian king and explains the origin name of the Sea. Art & Portrayal The myth of Theseus and the Minotaur is seen in a wide array of from antiquity. Most depictions show Theseus in with the Minotaur, who usually is in a submissive if not defeated role. It was a popular subject matter for art as the myth itself embodies the basic struggle between the natural and unnatural or the civilized versus the uncivilized, which is a common theme in many Greek artistic representations. There are also several coins from Crete which depict the Labyrinth construction on the reverse side; this suggests that there may be some fact to this myth of the Labyrinth and Minotaur, most likely springing from a combination of the Cretan reverence for bulls and the architectural complexity of their palaces. How to Make The Old Fashioned Cocktails at home should be fun and never stressful so we aren’t going to bore you with all the do’s and don’ts when it comes to making the Old Fashioned. Instead, I’m going to show you how we make it when we’re in the mood for a cocktail at home, plus a few twists for fun! The Alcohol Most commonly, bourbon or rye whiskey are called on for the Old Fashioned. That doesn’t mean to say that there aren’t other options. Gin, brandy and rum all work really, really well. We particularly love switching the whiskey for a dark, aged rum. In fact, if you were to walk into a bar and see us sipping on an Old Fashioned, you’d most likely see me with rye and Adam with aged rum. Whatever we go for, we stick to mid-range priced bottles. The Old Fashioned is a cocktail made by muddling sugar with bitters, then adding alcohol, originally whiskey but now sometimes brandy, and finally a twist of citrus (or orange) rind. It is traditionally served in a short, round, tumbler-like glass, which is called an Old Fashioned glass, named after the drink. The Old Fashioned. The Old Fashioned is one of the most venerable of cocktails, predating not only the motorcar but the presidency of Abe Lincoln. Properly made, it's strong but not too strong, sweet but not too sweet, and, most importantly, it's dead-simple and absolutely delicious. Feb 11, 2017. As cocktail recipes pop up and disappear by the season, the Old Fashioned remains. Here's how to make it from the comfort of your home. For Bourbon and Rye, we like Four Rose’s a lot, especially for being so well priced. Bulleit is a popular choice, too. We have their 10 year Rye in our bar right now. If you’re in the mood to try something more special, our friends swear by Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. There’s obviously many, many more options when it comes to whiskey so if you’ve got a favorite, share it in the comments below. The Sugar We stick to simple syrup. You can certainly use a superfine sugar (many people do), but keep in mind that the sugar needs to completely dissolve, otherwise you’ll end up with an unsweetened drink and sugary sediment at the bottom of your glass. Is ridiculously easy to make and since it lasts ages in the fridge, we can make one large batch and go back to it each time we want to make a cocktail. Using simple syrup lets you play a little, too. Swapping white sugar for brown sugar makes a rich, almost caramel-like syrup that works well in Old Fashioned cocktails. Honey or maple syrup are also a nice idea. Bitters, Orange and Cherries We add two to three dashes of bitters. Our standby is Angostura bitters, but one look in a well stocked store or online proves there are lots to experiment with. Depending on who makes it, the amount of fruit added to an Old Fashioned varies. We’ve seen everything from multiple slices of orange and an abundance of cherries muddled together then served in the glass to an Old Fashioned with no fruit whatsoever. We like somewhere in between. A 2-inch piece of orange or blood orange peel and a cherry (or two for me) and we’re happy. If we’re feeling feisty, we’ll go for a flaming orange twist. To do it, take a coin-sized slice of orange peel (with quite a bit of the white pith intact so it is easier to squeeze), squeeze it between your fingers and light a match or lighter next to it (be careful). The oils will spark and flame out. The old-fashioned is one of the oldest mixed drinks in the cocktail canon. (Original name: whiskey cocktail, which became old-fashioned whiskey cocktail, and then just old-fashioned.) It is a stirred drink, usually built in the glass in which it is served. Both rye and bourbon are suitable base spirits. For the sweetener, purists. Find out how to make an old fashioned. A sugar cube soaked in bitters, a shot of whiskey, and an orange peel; creating an impressive and timeless cocktail really is that easy. The drink is the one and only old-fashioned and it is one of the best ways to enjoy your favorite bourbon or rye whiskey. The old-fashioned is a classic whiskey cocktail that. A former frat boy and a free-spirited woman together attempt the impossible: an 'old-fashioned' courtship in contemporary America. If you do all of this close to or over the glass, a toasted orange aroma will fall down over the drink. We don’t add the flamed peel to the drink, but rubbing the flamed peel around the rim of the glass is a nice touch. (See our video above to see it in action) The flavor and aroma of the drink really changes and while we don’t do this all the time, it’s fun to experience the difference. Having Fun with The Ice Since we’ve gotten into making Old Fashioned cocktails at home, Adam dorked out a little and looked into the how and why of clear, large ice cubes. None of this is required for your cocktail, but since we used two of his ice balls in our photo and considering we’ve already bonded over our love of the Old Fashioned, I thought I’d take a shot at explaining what we’ve learned. I’m sure you’ve seen various large ice cube molds like (what we have). The problem is that if you just add water and freeze, you will be left with cloudy ice. Sep 17, 2017 - 1 min - Uploaded by Tipsy BartenderHere's the recipe: OLD FASHIONED 2 oz. (60ml) Whiskey 2 Dashes Bitters 1 Sugar Cube. The Old Fashioned is a cocktail made by muddling sugar with bitters, then adding alcohol, originally whiskey but now sometimes brandy, and finally a twist of citrus. Worse still, if you use the sphere mold, the water freezes in such a way that when you add the sphere to your drink, it has a very high chance of breaking into pieces. This all matters because cloudier ice cubes are less dense so they melt much quicker and break apart easier than clearer ice cubes. In other words, the clearer ice cubes are, the less dilution your cocktail will need to endure. And bonus, clear ice looks cooler. So how do you make clear ice cubes? There are quite a few gadgets you can buy online. Apr 10, 2014 - 3 minIn this video, you'll see how to make a classic old fashioned cocktail. This version calls for rye. We went the more DIY, budget-friendly route. After some research, we found this using an insulated mug. We use our tap water — since we have found it freeze quite clear using this method. The tap water in the last home we had did not produce clear cubes so we found that it was best to use filtered or boiled water. Here are the steps for doing it (or watch us do it at the end of the video above): • Place a small container inside an insulated mug. We used a small Rubbermaid container and an inexpensive mug found online. • Fill the mug with water so that the water line is above the small container inside the mug. • Grab a sphere plastic mold. Remove the stopper that comes with it (this stopper would cover the hole used to fill the mold). • Fill the mold with water. • Using your finger, cover the hole so that no air can enter the mold. Invert it so that the hole is facing down then carefully place the mold into the mug with water. Don’t remove your finger until the hole is completely submerged in the water. • Holding the sphere in place, pour out excess water in the mug so that the water line is at the same level as the small plastic container inside the mug. You can also use a straw for this step. Simply suck out the water until the water is at the correct level. • Place the mug with mold into the freezer and do not disturb until completely frozen. In the photo above, Adam is holding the clear ice ball on the left and an ice ball made by simply filling the mold and freezing on the right. Even though the ice isn’t 100% clear it is considerably better than the cloudy (and cracked) ice ball. It also seemed to melt less quickly. It is actually one of the ice balls seen in our Old Fashioned photo below. Recipe updated, originally posted May 2015. Since posting this in 2015, we have tweaked the recipe to be more clear and added a quick recipe video. – Adam and Joanne. • We stick to simple syrup over using sugar cubes or superfine sugar. Simple syrup is, as it’s name suggests, very easy to make and will last a month in the fridge. To make it, combine equal parts sugar (white or brown) and water in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook, swirling occasionally, until the sugar completely dissolves. Cool then keep, stored in a glass jar in the refrigerator up to one month. • Adding water: Some people add a splash of soda or still water to their Old Fashioned cocktails. We don’t do this since the ice (even if it is clear) will eventually melt a little and begin to dilute the cocktail anyway. We suggest tasting the drink before adding any water and go from there. • Nutrition facts: The nutrition facts provided below are estimates.
